The furniture collection “TOUCHING ANCIENT TIMES” by the Chinese home decor brand KAR, featuring the lacquer version of the oracle bone script series, was exhibited at Septième from October 9th to 29th, 2023. This new collection includes chairs, desks, benches, shelves, and screens, inspired by the oldest Chinese oracle bone scripts. By disassembling and refining the original characters, the works embody a more dynamic aesthetic of ancient and profound styles. While the series uses solid wood adorned with black lacquer, the exhibition specifically presents versions crafted using traditional lacquer-making techniques, emphasizing the handmade touch without excessive embellishments, inheriting and reviving the brand’s unique aesthetic language through the collision of ancient textual symbols and lacquer craftsmanship.

KAR is founded by Steven Yeung in 2020 in China. Kar is a home aesthetic brand that blends oriental wabi-sabi spirits with a contemporary aesthetic attitude. The brand name ‘kar’ hints at their inner pursuit in the oriental philosophy of ‘karma’, which relies on the power of time, nature and interpersonal relations.
