The Weight of Lightness|Tete 中国首个展

Septieme, in collaboration with Hitoma Studio and One Room靖物, will present the first solo exhibition of Japanese artist Tete in China, including the debut of the collaborative washi tea stove designed by Tete and Yoshihiro Mikami. The exhibition explores the interplay of paper and paper, paper and minerals, objects and space, evoking a layered sense of weight and lightness. Based on shared principles of “circulation, nature, and long-termism,” Tete and Yoshihiro Mikami co-created works for our exhibition in Shanghai under the theme of Reflective Surfaces. Mikami believes that, like washi, enamel is an organic surface material. Tete and designer Yoshihiro Mikami explored the potential of these two materials together. As a highlight of the exhibition, they will present a limited-edition of standing washi tea stove.  The exhibition opened on Nov.30th and run until Dec.8th.

About Artist
Tete studied Japanese painting for four years at university and later apprenticed under Hatano, learning to work with traditional washi paper for spatial surface decoration. In 2020, Tete continued to make washi-based creation in Kyoto independently.

The earliest personal works involved crafting tea-related works with washi. The name “Tete” derives from “thé” for tea. During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Japan faced immense economic and industry-wide challenges, leading to a collective mental decline. Using leftover materials from space design projects, Tete crafted washi coasters and distributed them to various restaurants as a gesture of encouragement and resilience. In 2021, Tete held her first solo exhibition at Ikenaka in Kyoto.

Tete’s creations transcend the perceived limitations of traditional materials, blending the background in painting with an attitude of non-repetition, conveying vitality and imagination that go beyond the medium itself. This exhibition features not only a rich array of tea-related works but also Tete’s never-ending exploration of textured paintings and collage works. The recent attempt to incorporate lacquer this September further expands the possibilities of washi’s surface expression.
